Our history

Friendship and love for our roots

Tenuta San Giacomo is an idea born of the joint efforts of the Bergaglio family and Andrea Fassone, a well-known entrepreneur in the winemaking world, a term of reference for the high-quality Italian wine import sector in the US since the late 1990s.

Over time, a relationship that began for professional reasons evolved into a solid and long-lasting friendship. Combining tradition, quality, taste and a contemporary flair, while paying homage to the patron saint of the land where this wine is produced, has been the natural evolution of their personal experiences.

Slide The Cortese
A millenary tale

With its centuries old winemaking traditions, Gavi is the ideal land to produce noble grapes and prestigious wines.
Its strategic position, with the sea breeze flowing in from nearby Liguria tempered by the climate of the hill, contributed to create a landscape where rows of vines extend as far as the eye can see.
Known in Piedmont since the 18th century, the Cortese grape variety holds sway over this land, where the early records attesting grapevine cultivation in the area go as far back as 972.

Territory and terroir

The Gavi D.O.C.G. (“Gavi CGDO “) denomination encompasses 11 municipalities: Bosio, Capriata d’Orba, Carrosio, Francavilla Bisio, Gavi, Novi Ligure, Parodi Ligure, Pasturana, San Cristoforo, Serravalle Scrivia and Tassarolo.
The vineyards lie at an altitude of between 150 and 450 m above sea level. High temperature variations between day and night create the ideal conditions for the development of fine scents in the wine. The presence of different types of soil, from red earth in the north, to marl and sandstone in the centre, and white clayey marl in the south, make the wine and the landscape truly unique.

Piedmont’s great white

D.O.C. since 1974, in 1998 Gavi wine became DOCG (“guaranteed and controlled designation of origin”) certified. Among the various types, the most appreciated are: still, semi-sparkling, sparkling, young and mature, aged in wooden barrels or in steel vats. Since 2010, Gavi D.O.C.G. has acquired two new variants: Riserva and classic method Riserva Spumante.
Gavi wine can be enjoyed both young and aged: tasting samples of Gavi aged 5, 10 years and longer has shown that after prolonged ageing this wine turns out to be perfectly preserved and even improved in terms of organoleptic properties.
